DSC_0279 copyHello,

Thank you for visiting Almost Home. My name is Laura. As a military spouse, the word “home”encompasses many different things for me. Home can mean Chicagoland, the place where I grew up and where the majority of my family still resides, or it can mean whatever duty station Uncle Sam assigns us. Over the past ten years, I have been privileged enough to feel at home in Hawaii, Georgia, Italy, Utah, North Carolina and Alabama. Yet, through the amazing world of genealogy I have discovered other homes as well–my ancestral homes. I have sat on the stone fence that surrounded the thatched-roof cottage where my great-grandfather grew up in Ballinrobe, Ireland. I have looked out across Ireland’s Clew Bay from the tiny island of Inishcuttle, the home my great-grandmother left behind when she immigrated to Chicago; and I have strolled the streets of Racalmuto, Sicily, imagining my great-grandmother walking those same streets as a young woman. In each of these instances, a part of me felt like I was home.

These experiences and the process involved in discovering my roots have impacted me such that I want to use what I have learned to help others “find their way home” as well. I have 9+ years experience researching my family history, and 2+ years helping others with their research. Please take a look at my services page to find out more about how I can help you.

Thank you again and I wish you all the luck in the world on your journey “home.”

I have a Master’s degree in Recreation, Sport and Tourism and a Bachelor’s Degree in History Education.

Most of my research has been in 19th – 20th Century Chicago, Utah, Irish and Italian Records. I have also completed reverse genealogy for Purple Hearts Reunited.

I am working towards earning a Certified Genealogist credential through the Board of Certification for Genealogists. Though I possess a great deal of education in related fields, I consider myself a life-long learner and would LOVE to receive more formal genealogical education in pursuit of this goal. I have my sights set on Boston University’s Genealogical Research Program. In the mean time, I am working my way through the most peer recommended textbooks in the genealogy field. Please contact me if I can be of assistance in any way.
